Well, I see no point in quibbling over definitions. If by 'demographic' you include the mentally ill and criminals, it's obviously fine to generalise them as mentally ill and criminal. Also ok to generalise men and women as men and women.

It's generalising negative characteristics onto immutable characteristics that is the problem. Women are mentally ill. Men are violent criminals.

More correctly "ALL men are not violent criminals", however most murders where the victim is female are committed by males and the same is not true for male victims. If this were true for any other group in society there wld be outrage. Why not for females?

OF COURSE males commit more violent crimes than women. Males are also the victims of violent crimes much more often for the same underlying reason. Carrying out, and absorbing violence is part of the traditional male role - so women don't have to.

So violence is just a necessary evil?

Sometimes. It would be great to eradicate it completely but until we find a way to make everyone in the world nice, this is not realistic.

Thats a pretty hands off kind of attitude, great if you live in a comfortable neighbourhood.

Huh? How does that relate in any way to what I said? How did you get from 'It's unrealistic to think that we will ever be able to completely eradicate violent criminality' to 'I don't think we should do anything about violent criminality.' This unreasonableness is a pattern w you

Just seemed a little callous for those who may have suffered violence thats all.

I see. People who aren't callous say we can make everyone in the world nice, do they? I think saying that seems a bit racist. (As we've clearly abandoned the rules of conversation where there is any expectation of responding relevantly to what has been said making sense.)

IS violence "a necessary evil?" I hope not. WAS violence a necessary evil at times in the ancestral environments in which H. sapiens evolved? It's hard to argue the contrary. We still have the same neural hard wiring we had back in the Pleistocene.

I think H. sapiens have a rich array of behaviours at our disposal many of which have yet to be fully understood. I don't buy into simplistic Natural Selection Evo Psych theories that have been inadequately tested. Too much complexity out there.

Okay, let's test this. How many human cultures can you cite in which the large majority of violence is absorbed by women, by convention, so that men don't have to? If males doing/absorbing violence isn't hard wired, then there ought to be at least a few exceptions... somewhere.
