We get this in other contexts. No-one thinks its inconsistent to defend a gay Christian's right to remain celibate because he thinks gay sex is a sin and also really loathe the idea that gay sex is a sin.

When it comes to gender-specific modesty codes, the same people who'd understand the above will suddenly decide that it's not good enough to defend women's right to choose them. We have to think they are a good thing too.

Liberalism is not about defending the rights of people to live as you'd like them to. Literally everyone does that. It's about defending the rights of people to live as you'd wish they didn't. You can also say you wish they didn't.

It’s not clear to me liberals have an obligation to tolerate illiberal practices (religions) unless they’re damn sure the participants can leave freely, are not facing undue pressure, whether legal, social, or familial, to participate etc.
