If you’re tweeting in support #NoHijabDay, you should also be prepared to tell Jews, Hindus, Mennonites, Catholic nuns, Coptic Christians, and Amish people that their scarves and head coverings are only oppressive, not symbols of modesty and devotion.

This seems a bit confused. You don't seem to realise it's the gender-specific modesty codes that are considered oppressive. Also, you don't even need to believe hijabs are bad to support the Iranian women fighting for the right not to wear them.

I do support the Iranian women. The state telling me to do anything is wrong. And why is it that only it’s only women? Shouldn’t men who wear turbans be made to believe they are oppressed too? To the extent its voluntary, its totally fine. Leave them be.

Yes, they should if its gender-specific modesty code that isnt a social expectation of women. I do leave people be but I dont think extreme social conservative becomes OK just because someone chooses it. Can still critique it.

This is a strange idea. We criticise socially conservative expectations of women and their bodies all the time. We dont say "Oh you chose to put moral value judgements on the way women dress. Thats fine then." We try to persuade them to stop doing that.

Helen, number one you’re putting words in the mouths of hijab wearers. How do you know it’s also about adhering to moral values? I happen to know a lot of Muslims and I know for a fact that many wear a hijab primarily to let people know they are Muslim. Isn’t that ok?

Im responding to you. It was you who called on the modesty and piety associations and you were right to. This is what Muslim and ex-Muslim feminists are objecting to. No-one cares if people wear scarves for fashion or identity statements. My mother does.
