Right. It’s also pretty arrogant of them to assume they speak for all native Americans

I'd point you to the recording of the panel in which five native tribe members all unanimously expressed the cringe-worthiness of the outdoor industry using the word tribe, but tbh I am not going to point your ignorance towards that comment box. Have a good day y'all.

if they wanted to have the right to control how we speak, they should have not lost the war of conquest so badly

Just ftr, in case anyone who doesn't block all dissidents happens to come across this thread, I don't agree with that statement about losing the war of conquest and I've never met @heinousjay

i’m not really expressing an opinion here. losers of wars have never, to my knowledge, been able to dictate terms to the winners

Nobody can dictate terms to anyone. Definitions are dictated by popular usage.

I studied etymology in college. I get it. But hearing from multiple native people that the the word used in marketing campaigns, etc in the outdoor industry offended and hurt them was enough for me to quit using it.

I don't support controlling language in this way. Almost all terms have scopes of acceptable definition and no one owns them. I see people getting emotionally hurt over this natural, ultimately unavoidable phenomenon as unfortunate, but something they should get past.

I'll certainly make some effort with my language generally but I too object to people claiming to own certain words.

Same. Locally, I'm not semantically prescriptive at all actually (except for a few small pet peeves) but that also means I'm not one to tell large groups of people how they should police their own language.

Not only that but this example seems based on this bizarre idea of collective guilt for white people. So it strikes me as different from something like people saying “don’t say gay when you just mean stupid.”

this strange concept of shared guilt based on similar skin tone is the root of why i went immediately to my offensive point about war.
