I get annoyed when it is claimed that 'atheism'. 'secularism', 'skepticism' or 'humanism' is unwelcoming to women & people of colour because it seeks to equate those two demographics with silly ideas about gender and race.pic.twitter.com/ecb7d1v73n

Well...many Skeptic Shitlords did make skepticism leave a bad taste in women and POC's mouths. According to these Shitlords, you need a peer-reviewed journal article to treat people with inherent worth and dignity.
There are tribes among skeptics just as there are among all sorts of groups not united by values, yes, but it doesn't break down to 'women' and 'people of colour' who can and do subscribe to a wide variety of values.
I've encountered sexist and racist skeptics and but it was on PZ Myers blog that I got told to fuck myself with a rusty chainsaw and that I was lying about my gender.
I’m sorry to hear that. And you’re right that jerks can be found everywhere. I actually still consider myself a skeptic, but I don’t identify as part of the Skeptic Community because it seems like for every Yvette d’Entremont, there are a hundred Sargon of Akkads
I tend to avoid the tribes too.
Except the Ugandan Knuckles tribe. They seem alright. They just click their tongues and ask if you know de wae.
"Skepticism" is as much an organized religious movement as anything else is. See, e.g., https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Carrier …
It's not though tribes do form around it. Its a way of thinking.
So is Christianity, but nobody denies that that's an organized religion
No, Christianity is a doctrine and that's what people organize around. Magical thinking would be the equivalent and opposite to skepticism.
I'm not sure what you're saying. "Magical thinking" isn't a "way of thinking"?
Yes, it is. That is the way of thinking. Christianity is a doctrine.
Ok, got it. Not sure there's a reasonable distinction to draw there, though. In any case, a doctrine and an organization are two very different things.
I think people of color are under represented in skepticism. I don’t think it’s because they’ve been pushed out. I think it’s because they are uninterested or preoccupied. But, the response to Elevatorgate suggests many so-called skeptics are openly hostile to women’s well-being.
Hostile to the idea that asking a woman out for coffee is harassment, certainly.
That’s a silly misrepresentation of the issue. There’s nothing wrong with coming onto someone. A confined, isolated place, however, is not the proper venue to make sexual overtures toward a stranger. A sensible person should see why this would make someone feel threatened.
Sure but some people have poor social skills. I'm one of them. It really doesn't need making a big deal of.
If you have “poor social skills” that may be why you don’t understand why it is not appropriate to make sexual overtures toward a stranger in an isolated, confined place. Instead of taking this gentle feedback and updating like a good skeptics, they threw a rapey tantrum.
This suggest something more than just social awkwardness, it suggests a willful disregard for the well-being of others. “Nerds” are given undue latitude. They exibit the same rapey douchebag behavior as frat bros and jocks but — because they are effete — people think it’s cute.
