For a stress free time in the US: Treat US tea as a distantly related drink to UK Tea. A pleasant, slightly flavored hot water to be enjoyed with lemon.

Then, prepare yourself to be endlessly disappointed, frustrated and perplexed. And, I hope you’re traveling on a UK airline so you’ll get something vaguely like tea on the plane home. Otherwise you’re stuck till you pass customs.

I shall just not go to far from the house I am staying in which will be fully equipped. I might buy a flask.

It’s for the best. Even then though, you’ll discover that the electrical system isn’t really designed for running a kettle. Saucepan on the stove is my preferred option.

Hot (not boiling) water, with the teabag left in the cup. Is that not up to your standards?
-
Also, important - you have to ask for 'cream', not milk. Americans call milk for tea and coffee 'cream', and they will look confused if you ask for milk.
-
No, sorry, you have a bad assumption here. Milk and Cream both get used separately by different people.

Please tell me you've watched a few episodes of Portlandia on Netflix. So we're clear, Portland culture is representative of only Portland, not the US.

The Tao Of Tea is actually a wonderful shop with different varieties of tea (Indian, Chinese, British, etc). Quite a wonderful place to visit
