There certainly are a few. However, it very much depends what you are crying 'freedom of speech' in response to. If it is a threat to freedom of speech, this would seem appropriate.https://twitter.com/seriouslyclara/status/958407785661661184 …

Does anyone else find it's mostly assholes and morons who cry "freedom of speech!" all the time?

What I find most annoying is when people say 'freedom of speech' in response to being asked why they said something. That is meaningless. You might as well say 'larynx.' These both explain how you were able to say something, not your rationale, factual & ethical, for saying it

I did say "mostly" and "all the time." The people who are actually claiming freedom of speech in the proper/lawful sense, those are few and far between, especially on the internet. And it's mostly used by those who are just pricks who don't want to be called out.

What is the Brit legality about free speech? We have the battered 1st amendment, but am clueless (American) about rest of world

It is unsatisfactorily vague leading people to get arrested for speech. Very often around Islam. eg we had a man arrested for saying he'd asked a hijabi woman to explain terrorism but also a Muslim for saying British soldiers should die and go to hell.

I take issue with this bit of the sketch posted on that thread. To be yelled and heckled at like I’ve seen in uni campuses in America, to force no platforming, because a minority don’t like the speaker is effectively stopping someone speaking.pic.twitter.com/fIncn4hIYH

The weird part is that on college campuses that receive federal funding, it actually *is* a constitutional violation. US Federal equal opportunity & civil rights laws are already enforced in education. It stands to reason constitutional amendments would be as well.

Freedom of speech is hardly trivial. Without it any other freedom means nothing.

@seriouslyclara It *may* - just hypothesis - it may be that only arseholes (almost by definition) lack the intelligence, the sly, nimble verbal flexibility to evade the hurdles erected to silence them?

Or that stupid assholes are the only ones obstinate enough to not see “the way the wind is blowing” and insist they should be able to say what they please. Smart folks may be clever enough to avoid getting in trouble, but how smart is it, really, in the long term to stay silent?
