I just think your reasoning (lack of unawareness of existence) is an ethically unsound position to take considering the nature of the subject. There ought to be a moral foundation of valuing life, and exceptions built around that. Not the other way around.

It's a metaphysical problem. Empiricists have to find evidence of a "beginning" and draw the line there. Stepping back and thinking about a life in the abstract is considered "mystical thinking", or so I've gathered from engaging with that crowd.
