I wouldn't say "rude," I'd say "thoughtless." Depends where you're from! W/ New Yorkers, I assume they're simply incapable of understanding viewpoint of non-New Yorkers, & have no problems. W/ Midwesterners, expect to be smothered under bland "niceness."

The Southerners I've met are warm, friendly, and gracious, though the stereotype is they also know how to weaponize politeness. (I've never experienced that, possibly b/c as a Midwesterner, my default setting is that bland niceness

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. That matches my experiences living in NY as well as the Midwest for several years. Plus lots of travel in the south.
