It's always women who get brainwashed, isn't it? Whether by patriarchal gender norms or feminism, I'm constantly being told women don't know what they want and have no agency and are very impressionable. I think it's a Christian culture thing that goes back to the Sin of Eve. https://twitter.com/pookietooth/status/956933568743161856 …

I do it because I like it and I feel better when I've made an effort.

But that qualifies as doing it for the social status, doesn't it? It's not like you invented the style yourself or use items that nobody recognizes as "feminine," do you?
-
Fashion is social, yes. Humans are, in fact. We pick from what is in fashion when we dress, dance, choose hairstyles etc.

This! Although, as a man, I do enjoy prettifying myself sometimes. Nice suit, close shave (well, close as it gets with a beard) neatly trimmed beard etc.... but it doesn’t happen much!

Do you "like it" because you're a masochist, or because of the social status you receive?

Had you grown up in a culture where no one wears makeup, no one removes body hair, and heels didn't exist, would you still choose them when you first saw them? Does the makeup look like most people's makeup, or is it in unusual colors?

Which was exactly my point, social construct involves life long exposure and cannot be separated from what appears to be individual choice

If nobody wore makeup, would you have thought it up on your own?
