I do not become a postmodernist because I think that gender identity is complicated and involves more than gonads and chromosomes. It also relates to brains, hormones and genetics. I think this because this is what the emerging science shows.

I agree, although I disagree that this therefore changes the meaning of gender.

Science can't change what we mean by the words we speak, and gendered terms "man", "woman", "boy" and "girl" are generally meant to refer to biological sex.

We're still talking about this tho. Biological sex indicators are to be found in genitals, chromosomes, hormones and brains.

OK - I wasn't sure, since part of the debate is around the very definition of gender, with some people saying it's basically synonymous with self-identification, which makes gender meaningless.

On your point, I'd say that we already have perfectly adequate language to categorise the vast majority of people, but we could stand to develop better language for the rare people who aren't perfectly categorised with "man" or "woman".

I sometimes wonder if we described trans as a “third gender” if this would solve most of the squabbles. It seems to mostly work fine in India and Thailand for example.

I agree on this point. It *ought* to, I think. But many would insist on the right to identify as the other sex.

Yes, most trans people are closeted.
