Very interesting piece which covers a range of reasonable perspectives. Trump is not a postmodernist but he is taking advantage of an epistemological shift postmodernism was hugely influential in producing. I argued this at the Battle of Ideas. https://conatusnews.com/academic-roots-post-truth-society/ … https://twitter.com/sapinker/status/956501201981501440 …

No? You think our current post-truth problem is simple?

I think it has nothing to do with any particular ideology gaining this cultural influence you seem to show it has.

Nothing? Postmodernism had not even a slight effect on society's perception of truth and knowledge?

I don't think it's an academic or philosophical postmodernism. Maybe a cultural one? If anything I doubt Soren Kiekegaard or Fouccault has much to do with it.

Hmm. I'm just about to publish a piece on this showing the line from, say, Foucault through Butler, Said etc and into activism and mainstream social conscience.

Yeah I really don't think the common voters know anything about that, nor do I think that is essential to the trump win. That's all I'm saying.

You don't? I do. I think our confidence in objective knowledge and our expectation of reasoned argument has decreased considerably and that this has been enabled by the left's dropping of that particular ball & embrace of postmodern ideas.

I'm sorry but that is a really big stretch. I see that as you projecting your personal problem with the left to some grand importance. Try saying this. "Perhaps the right can be bad irregardless of the left"

I think the average person sees the symptoms of postmodernism very clearly but they likely have little familiarity with the theoretical underpinnings of it. I know that Trump voters often cite PoMo ideas as a source of enmity even tho they refer to it as 'liberalism.'

I will be publishing in a few days but I also published a detailed look at PoMo ideas affecting us right now here:https://areomagazine.com/2017/03/27/how-french-intellectuals-ruined-the-west-postmodernism-and-its-impact-explained/ …
