Postmodernists believe that truth is socially constructed by discourses. There is no evidence that Trump believes this. However, he does seem to be constructing his own truth with his own discourse & trying, with demonstrable success to get this socially validated.

It is true that postmodernism was defined as a scepticism to metanarratives & MAGA is a metanarrative. But so is the postmodernist overarching explanation of social constructivism by dominant discourses (power). They are just competing ones

'For Foucault, Trump, who seeks not truth but only power. would be an extreme example of what postmodernism opposes.' Yes, but postmodernism needs to stop crediting itself with the discovery that practices &institutions claiming to be based on truth are, in fact, focused on power

Has there ever been a time when humans were not aware of this? Hasn't propaganda on the part of rulers & the pointing out of said propaganda on the part of dissident thinkers been part of every civilisation ever?

The arrogance & condescension of 'You need us to point out that things assumed to be true might not be' is breathtaking. Gee, thanks. It's not like we have entire cognitive structures built to produce plausible lies & others built to detect them because we've known this forever.

“In evolutionary terms, every time a population of individuals became good at detecting these liars, the liars became better at concealing their lies…a never-ending arms race” (McNamara and Trunbull. An Evolutionary Psychology of Leader-Follower relationsp11).

We're not concerned that postmodernists want to interrogate what is true and how we know this. That's great. You didn't invent doing this tho & we're concerned about your epistemology and how it compares with other methods like, for example, science.

It's best to view Trump as a pre-modernist, which is to say his moral worldview (and behavior) lie far beneath the standard of modern understandings of contracts, rights, or the importance of reason.
-
I do. We wrote a whole thing about pre and post modernists.https://areomagazine.com/2017/08/22/a-manifesto-against-the-enemies-of-modernity/ …

It's a fine piece, having now read it, and appreciate you having wrote it. I think my only thoughts: There is some need for ethnic identity (left) and some need for spirituality (right; while perhaps not=religion) in a society. These are values not well understood by moderns.
-
So, in addition to standing up for itself, there needs to be intelligent co-option of those values within a modern framework. You then may have what people have variously referred to as metamodern, reconstructive postmodernism, or integralism.

tldr: Most academics assert they are categorically superior to Trump. The are supposed systems thinkers yet cannot conceive of how their intellectual activities operate as part of
#TheSystem nor how their works unintended consequences may have helped Trumphttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/25/opinion/trump-postmodernism-lies.html …Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I have thought about that too. Postmodermism backfires at the postmodernistic left?

But more than that, Trump is a pre-traditionalist. Which is to say his moral worldview does not integrate a sense of belonging or loyalty either. He has no code, no honor, not even a religious code. It is all impulse and narcissism.

If you believe that truth is something you make up and is biased you're essentially saying everything is a lie. So why be upset by lying or by someone who lies?

I think of him as the slave in the Socratic dialogues who understands the world intuitively (and even has some common sense) rather than intellectually. He's the giant middle finger to the philosopher class because he has attained power without them.

Just like Bush and the neocons did over a decade ago. Pomos are a conservative’s best friend
