I have begun to realise how big a thing projection really is. Today, I find it doesn't matter at all that I spend 90% of my time addressing the problems on my own side - the left. As soon as I criticise someone on the right, I'm accused of lefty tribalism.

I did not know you were a leftie. That oddly made me smile.

And that itself is a fantasy. But I can live with the idea of "reasonable discussion" being a projective fantasy itself: it is better than violence and better than the echo chamber (both of which mutually imply one another all too often).

The political is ruled by the imaginary, the ego (hence "identity") and fantasy. Fantasies of control sadly themselves control much political thinking on many fronts. It would be nice if people could finally give that up and openly discuss how to make real people's lives better.

Tough old world for wives and pussy cats as I often tell my wife :) As an aside: when my wife comes into the lounge with a hoover, the cat looks at me, then we both quietly leave the room. It's quite funny really, the hoover isn't even switched on at that stage.

cf "Indifference to Reality. All nationalists have the power of not seeing resemblances between similar sets of facts. A British Tory will defend self-determination in Europe and oppose it in India with no feeling of inconsistency." (Orwell, Notes on Nationalism)
