Good point. I suspect where they tend to be outliers is that they're rubbish at clothes, make-up etc, perhaps don't like children much. But very good at the navel-gazing, fretting about social interactions stuff. Whereas girls who are no good at that bit just get on with life.

Lesbian separatists have informed a great deal of the contents of feminism. http://bit.ly/1wxWvUn Not the best source, but the quote from Betty Friedan is telling.
-
Radfems are very unpopular right now - deplored as TERFs. They have very little influence on the current intersectionality problem. Also lesbian separatists are long gone.
-
Gender essentialism is a different issue vs. radical feminism. TERFs are both, IME, though they support different underlying principles. As to the "long gone" status of lesbian separatists, Laurie Penny continues to draw a salary.
-
Laurie is a lesbian separatist? that's news to me
-
Okay, I exaggerate some, but the lesbian part is true.

That maybe describes a typical middle-class feminist. I think there is also a strain of feminism that is motivated more by extreme left wing viewpoints (tearing down the capitalist patriarchy, denying biological differences etc.)

I think most of it is just overwhelming social pressure to the point of it overriding observable reality.
