I don't think you have the right end of things. Lyotard was a Marxist, of course, but the Marxist meta-narrative became untenable. Lyotard *then* denied *the commensurability of meta-narratives*, rendering the (rational) comparison of Marxism to Western Liberalism meaningless.

He (allegedly) showed that the evidently superior Western Liberal meta-narrative was *just as irrational* as Marxist historicism, rescuing Marxism and rationalizing the development of those ideas into Neo-Marxism.
