Not sure if this is more dismissive of women or men. I'm there are many female philosophy students who can actually talk about philosophy as well as (or even instead of) relationships & cute things. Also male ones who are not pompous when they talk about philosophy.https://twitter.com/existentialcoms/status/949420661583233024 …

Female philosophy student on twitter: "I'm thankful for all my amazing friends for supporting me during stressful midterms. Also here is a picture of my dog!" Male philosophy student on twitter: "Here's why most philosophers misunderstood Wittgenstein BLAH BLAH I'm the smartest."

It is interesting how much @existentialcoms recreates medieval Christian ideas of male and female 'sins of the tongue.' Women prattle irrelevantly and emotionally whilst men get carried away with pride in their own knowledge.

Of course, what this shows is that humans are consistently uncharitable in reading gendered differences in communication and whether women or men are considered more problematic depends very much on the zeitgeist.

I took EC’s tweet as lamenting the fact that philosophy students would talk about philosophy, rather than talk about themselves

For an existentialist he sure is shallow. "I stopped following philosophy students because they didn't post dog pictures."

Actual discussion of subject is "BLAH BLAH"? 😕 In my experience both male, female and trans can do "BLAH BLAH", but tend to make different uses of social media.

I think the tweet accidentally demonstrates (or maybe is commenting on) gender typical differences in how males and females communicate regardless of intelligence ;)

That’s one of the central problems I have with the conduct of certain ideological tribes: a marked tendency to react to perceived sexism (for example) with further sexism (re *both* sexes).

That kind of blanket attribution of supposedly immutable characteristics to certain genders regardless of the individuals concerned is very sexist
