Isn’t the issue “Personal brands”. Social media means everything is exposed in a way we can’t yet cope with. Most listeners make snap decisions on immediately available info. These mean reputation is hugely important & by extension nobody wants apologies (ie mistakes) on record.

Exactly. It shouldn’t be necessary, but it saves time that might otherwise be spent dealing with people bringing up all the controversial things that person has said/done and chastising you for agreeing with such an awful person.
