It typically has been, yes. This is how we end up with societies based on religion and other irrational narratives and why western liberal democracy is so new and rare.

I truthfully do not believe that more liberalism is the cure for liberalism. It's like trying to put out a dumpster fire by adding gasoline. imo

You think it's the liberalism causing the problems right now? Not the far-right, far-left and Islamists?

I think it would be more accurate to say that I believe liberalism, like all human endeavours, has a shelf life and that the significant problems posed by the far right/left and religious fundamentalism add to the overall problems that western civilisations face today.

Unfortunately liberalism is the only one of the applied societal structures that has worked, but I believe the far left to be the inevitable symptom of it. Hey, I might be wrong. I just don't know what to believe anymore.

      What is specifically?

Equal opportunities, freedom of belief and expression, the dignity and rights of the individual regardless of race/gender/sexuality, science, reason, the aim for progress.

I agree with all of that on paper, but application of those principles seems to be tricky because, as we have seen, rights can be weaponised and equality often gets mistaken with equity.

If we can't agree on the turf upon which to play the game of life, how can we apply rules without inevitably including multiple exceptions?

We just have to keep working at it. The option to all agree isn't available.

Then be a realist. If we don't try to reach ethical agreement, we won't. If we do try, we'll get as close as we can.

I don't believe the two to be mutually exclusive. It feels like opting out of participating in the process is the safest way for the layman.

OK but then we'd all be hunter-gatherers, dying in childbirth and from tooth problems and killing each other in tribal warfare.

OK, but then there's not much to say. You have chosen not to participate and can focus on something else whilst other people try to sort out society. Conversation over. We can talk about puppies.
