I find it's usually men who say this tho in a kindly attempt to empathise with how it might feel to be a woman. It's how they would feel if they were suddenly so much weaker than so many people. On my part its a reflection on when I've been in heated debate with a woman, and when a short while later, after calming down and looked back at my actions and manner critically, I've felt moved to apologise, and trying to literally see things through the other persons eyes...

... have seen this physically bigger person using a raised voice and hand waving gestures - although not intended as physical intimidation, I can easily see how that might be the effect. I know the true state of my temperament, but that might not be so obvious to my opponent

My own perspective is the only one I can be absolutely sure of. I can attempt to see through someone elses, that is empathy, no? I can only make an educated, informed guess at best as to how my behavior might seem threatening to others, in their context.
