Seems to me we've become much more fearful generally... parents not allowing kids to play outside, for example. It hinders children's ability to deal with the outside world as part of growing up....as Icould back in the 1950s.

Hello, Mother! Yes, indeed. Even as violent crime decreases, we fear it more and perceive it as increasing. Steven Pinker is excellent on this.
