I find it's usually men who say this tho in a kindly attempt to empathise with how it might feel to be a woman. It's how they would feel if they were suddenly so much weaker than so many people. All that’s true, but occasionally it does dawn on you that most men COULD inflict serious harm on you as a woman if they chose to. Thank jeebus 99% of them are decent human beings and wouldn’t entertain the thought for a second.

Men probably do this in part because men are the *targets* of physical (non-sexual) violence far more often that women. Just in terms of public physical safety, I think men are much more at risk of physical harm than women; tho the reverse prob true in intimate environments.
