"It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true, that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during ‘God save the King’ than of stealing from a poor box." -George Orwell, England Your England

I stand for God Save the Queen, btw, but I do so ironically, so that's OK. XD I do quite like the queen, actually. Save her as long as poss, please. I'll have a rethink when Charles inherits. It will probably depend on whether he's said anything ludicrous about homeopathy lately

I don't intend to compare the US and the UK Left, btw. That would be an enormous & complicated job which would not gain me much. I kind of did that by accident.

Can you accurately compare the US left with the UK left?
-
Not really. Our centre righties would be considered left over there.

Does the far college left seem to have a wider bullying-type influence (outside of college) in the US than it does in the UK?
-
Ours is more understated and insidious, I think. But it's there. Also, we have a whole different racial history so that makes quite a lot of difference.

I'm a mature sociology student, which should be prime SJW territory, but I see precious little of it. There are a few who possibly fall into that category, but they're extremely nice, and not at all authoritarian or preachy (not sarcasm).

I've had more trouble in East London but mostly when I tried to talk about evolutionary psychology, criticise feminism or question postmodernism,
-
Ah, our lead lecturer hates postmodernism. Also describes himself as a 'biological realist', so he's no blank slatist either.

We're culturally 10 years behind the US. All that crap is coming...
-
Dear god please don’t say that!
-
No, we have the same ideas. Same theories. We just process them a bit differently.

How often have UK loony lefties shut down talks with violence, AntiFa help at demos, had profs fired etc.? Statues; LBTG SOC siding with ISOC over Namazie talk; ... the odd spy ... not so bad. And even Tommy Robinson at Oxford Union. Tolerance. Haven't reach US insanity yet.

I suspect it's because we see our 'commies' as being more comical than dangerous, more lefty old fart intellectuals professors, union Jacks and Tooting Popular Front students. We rely on Philby, Burges etc for a bit of glamour and intrigue.

US conservatism runs through society like a geologic vein. It's a weird, distinct feature compared to most Western society. As an American who went to Cambridge, I found UK left and right to be performative almost to the point of comedy sometimes. It entertained me.
