We must be free to doubt or even reject expert advice, but it still doesn't change the fact that the truth is the truth, and that the only way to get that truth is through something approaching the scientific method, whether employed by people, or the so-called experts.

Yes & no. Scientific method isn't appropriate for everything, though

You wouldn't use it to write an opera.

Yes. But it's also not the only way to get to truth, either. For instance, the legal system is also, at its core, a truth-finding institution, but the scientific method has no application there at all

Well, it does. It requires evidence to support a hypothesis beyond reasonable doubt.

      1) No experimentation (so very definitely not the scientific method) 2) "Beyond a reasonable doubt" is a criminal standard only; civil matters only require 50% plus an iota. If all you're saying is "truth claims require evidence," sure, I agree wholeheartedly ...

Then you are defining "science" and "scientific method" in an idiosyncratically broad way, IMO.

I'm not really defining them at all, tbh.

We can chat about the other great method of assessing truth claims on another visit to the BM (and once you’ve finished my book haha). The law of evidence is kinda my jam ;)
