Very interesting piece. However, I do not say that we need to go backwards and in fact, addressed that accusation in the piece cited when I argue that the modern project & liberalism is inherently progressive. https://areomagazine.com/2017/12/08/the-problem-with-truth-and-reason-in-a-post-truth-society/ …https://twitter.com/QuilletteM/status/951445892480909315 …

I accept that desires different to my own are not necessarily less sophisticated or less mature. In fact, mine are not sophisticated. Very simple. I just want to address the concerns that people actually have and try to do so in a rational, evidence-based way that has appeal.

I actually share concerns of the postmodern left about marginalisation of minority groups and of the premodern right about preserving cultural integrity. We discuss that here in the section called 'What the anti-modernists get right.'https://areomagazine.com/2017/08/22/a-manifesto-against-the-enemies-of-modernity/ …

I am suspicious of sophistication as a concept. It can be applied to subjects which are naturally complex and require a great deal of breaking down and nuance but it can also apply to the process of obscuring the fact that something is absolute cobblers.

I prefer to think in terms of depth of knowledge, complexity of issues, nuance of analysis than in terms of sophistication.

Essentially, I think we should worry less about whether our understanding of society is sophisticated and more about whether it is rooted in reality.

I don't think I accused you of that, but I suggested the term 'premodern' implies 'less well developed' etc
-
That's right, yes. We spent quite a lot of words explaining why. Have you seen James Taylor, the theologian who says postmodernism can take Christianity back to a pro-government state?
-
I don't know why it changed pre-modern to pro-government!
-
Argh. And it's James K A Taylor. New phone.
