Indeed. It's not hard. Support liberal Muslims, reforming Muslims and ex-Muslims and oppose authoritarian conservative Muslims, fundamentalists and Islamists. Like we do with everything else. https://twitter.com/ChrisSturr/status/950808333065375749 …

Is there such a thing as Islamophobia (prejudice against Muslims)? Is criticism of fundamentalism and extremism (obviously justified) ever a cover for, or motivated by, Islamophobia? If so, maybe talking about the need to "acknowledge the problems with Islam" is poor wording.

I don’t see why we can’t talk about the ideological issues with Islam and how in some cases it leads to problems without it being assumed that this is driven by, or further fuelling, prejudice and bigotry against Muslims.

But sometimes it really is fueled by prejudice and bigotry against Muslims, in ways that aren't transparent to the very people who raise the "ideological issues with Islam."

Yes, *sometimes* it is, not every time. So people shouldn’t be accused of islamophobia, generalising, or bigotry unless they are actually doing things that indicate those directly, right? Yet criticising the ideology is just about always called islamophobia, etc.

Islam is not "an ideology. It is a religion, with adherents, a tradition, a history, multiple communities and cultures, controversies, factions, values, counter-traditions, etc., etc. This is why talking about "the problems of Islam" is painting with such a broad brush.

so is Christianity. Bet you have no issues talking about the problems of it. Start with old test.

Sure. And it would exhibit bias to say that this or that scriptural passage or practice or fundamentalist belief indicates "problems with Christianity". You're catching on.

It's not bias. It's true. Measurable. It's not a coincidence that homophobia, sexism, denial of reproductive freedom, evolution denial, Trump voting etc correlates with Christianity!

Not just fundamentalists, it’s the case for many “moderates” as well. Same for moderate Muslims. The issues might be worse among the fundamentalists, but they don’t originate solely with them. Behaviour is motivated by beliefs, & religious tenets are not a small part of that.

This discussion is all over the place. I was responding to Helen's claim that Christians in the US voted for Trump. But that was true of evangelicals (fundamentalists), not of Christians as a whole.

But a majority of white people voted for Trump too! And a majority of men! And a majority of white women! The level of analysis and spurious generalizations here is abysmal.

I was just responding to the “problems with Islam” wording criticism, and that’s what we’ve been discussing. Nothing about Trump. 🤷‍♂️
