Ok. Now I understand you better. I do not think (at all) that this is tedious. And I think that it is a bit delusory to expect science to bring answers (what exactly could it bring that would help in thah debate?). Ok for a modus vivendi, this should not prevent questionning ...

It will help us to know why some people are trans. You can question other things if you want.

Of course and it will be very interesting. I just don’t expect that it will bring an answer to the question of: is « feeling » enough for « being »? Which is actually the question at the core of all this.

Well, science will tell us the being. What aspects of us make up gender. So far, we have only gone on what can be seen with eyes - reproductive systems. Now we know that brains and hormones and genetics are also involved.

We already know all this. At least that this is possible. And by the way, DNA is not exactly « visible ». Plus it is striking that the transitioning is only about the « visible » and actually, the whole gender stuff as a social construction is too.

I said reproductive systems are visible and that's what we have gone by. We can now see if chromosomes say the same thing as it. But I don't care about these arguments. If you're happy to just leave people alone to do their own thing, I;m happy.

I don’t really disagree on the « let people do what they want » as long as it is reciprocal. It is an utopy, but why not? Still, as ideas matter (and cannot be adressed without meaningful words), I will continue to ask my question. Who knows, one day I might receive ans answer...

You'll receive lots of answers. There is no shortage of answers and well-developed rationales to the questions 'What is a woman?' and 'Is feeling like a woman the same as being a woman?'

This is all people do, argue about these from from different ideological/philosophical frameworks. It's incredibly tedious and our essay was an attempt to cut through it & address practicalities and a simple liberal ethics in relation to it.

And somehow, I agree. More and more, it will become obvious that different metaphysics lead to radically different point of views. Hence, people will have to coexist. Still lots of progress to do on this, on both sides.

I think it's better to care less about definitions and more about letting people do what they want, sorting out the practical issues and waiting on the science to explain this phenomenon more clearly.
