It is discrimination to tell people not to speak based on attributes they have no control over. It's not my fault I am a straight white woman, why does that mean I don't get to speak? Don't judge people on their attributes, judge them on what they are actually saying.

There is this one reason for silencing people: An individual from a minority might have the "next great idea" so members of the majority need to be silent. This works both ways: what if a member of the now silenced has the "next great idea"? The solution: don't silence people.

I think Hitchens used that as an argument against abortion. The potential in every human being to be great for humanity, therefore every chance of life should be embraced. As far as I understand his argument anyway, I could be misinterpreting it.

I'm not saying that free speech rights and abortion rights are the same thing. The argument for potential can be applied to many subjects and of course has to take into account additional circumstances depending on the subject.
