It's more of a problem that generalizations are too often assumed, imo. Who, except some (admittedly loud) fringe weirdos, ever means "all Muslims", "all women", "all men", "all anything" when talking about the respective groups? To assume this is almost always a strawman

No, it doesn’t always work but it’s an attempt to stop people accusing me of being something I’m not, ie a bigot. And yes, some of the whataboutery from Left in response to criticism of Islamism focuses on historical stuff like the crusades or the inquisition. “LOOK OVER THERE!!”
