I think the idea is more that innately masculine men and boys socially inspire/pressure each other to harmful (to them and others, AKA toxic) heights of masculinity.

Toxic masculinity is a real thing, I think (so is toxic femininity), characterised by absolute ruthlessness, antipathy towards emotions, total lack of care for others, and actions designed primarily to impress women. But that’s only one masculine model.

A model which would be unlikely to serve many well in a group combat scenario, for example.
