Aside from civil rights, when did people care about gender equality before feminists told us we were equal?
In England, this began being talked about commonly somewhere around the middle of the 16th century - see Agrippa, Jane Anger, Aemilia Lanyer. There was a surge at the end of the 19th - see 'revolting daughters'. This gained public support in the 60s as the zeitgeist changed.
