to randomly jump in, the way I view metamodernism's oscillation/simultaneity is as a means to recognise and attempt to glimpse an objective 'truth' of the world beyond merely our subjectivities—which I feel is mm's defining move beyond pomo

Hello! I cited your manifesto in a recent talk about this. I am not sure how oscillation helps. I think trying to strengthen the distinction between the search for objective truth and the emotional resonance of subjective perceptions is key right now.

I'm puzzled by that statement, since I see metamodernism's oscillation/simultaneity of thoughts/feelings acting to enable—as you wonderfully put it—"the search for objective truth and the emotional resonance of subjective perceptions"

We already do this. Naturally. All the time. What is needed is neither oscillation nor simultaneity but a conscientious effort to distinguish between them and to preserve systems which enable us to do this collectively by mutual criticism. thanks, will give a read. As I say, we absolutely already do this—that is precisely the point of metamodernism attempting to articulate where we're at, and how we've moved beyond a dead end of postmodern relativism

But it doesn't. It remains profoundly relative. It is entirely in our nature to mix objective reality up with emotionally resonant tribal narratives. Modernity is when we began taking steps to overcome this and it worked astoundingly well. It overshot in undervaluing psychology.

We are now threatened with a return to pre-modernity because of a plurality, not of perspectives which is valuable, but of epistemologies which we are losing the ability to evaluate for worth due to postmodernism & resulting religious & ideological mythological pushback.

Movement isn't always forward, of course (alas). I don't think we'll devolve into a pre-modern society though, barring some kind of nuclear apocalypse (which, granted, is looking scarily more likely now). Religion also doesn't seem to be going away, which makes me sad, so…

but the point of metamodernism is that something can exist both as profoundly relative & an objective truth at once. And not as some kind of Hegelian synthesis, but as an entirely new mode of existence. At least, that's how I try to view the world as an artist attempting movement

Just because you make a name and attach some imagined "Abilities" or "Attributes" to it does not mean it is actually useful or "knowledge"... People do a lot of things like this eg "critical walking" but don't produce anything worth reading, revisiting or researching...
