LOL. I've lost one of my most ardent admirers on Facebook. It's gone from 'Wow! You're amazing, brilliant, eloquent & I agree with everything you say' to, following a piece she doesn't like 'I've just realised you're insincere, ill-motivated, know nothing & can't write.'

This is why I am always wary of people who are highly, gushingly complimentary. Sometimes, that's just their emotional expressiveness, but often they're tribalists who latch onto people whose ideas they like & then feel personally betrayed when they have one they don't.

This is why my favourite compliments go something like 'I don't agree with all/much of what you say but I'm always interested in reading it.' This means people are actually reading what I say & not slotting me in an ally box where I will at some point transgress & be vilified.

Have you done any writing specifically on tribalism? I know you have brushed on it in a few of your articles. One of my favorite books is The Righteous Mind by @JonHaidt.

Not specifically. This one probably looks most at tribalism and also draws on Moral Foundations Theory.http://conatusnews.com/care-much-hypocrisy-now/ …

Yes, Prophet Helen surely will show us the way! She carries within her the precious shards of the eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. So it is foretold.

No, but fortunately you don't. You blaspheme against my most sacred values, insult my heritage and nationality and are generally gits.

I gain a lot of followers whenever I defend men. I got a bunch from defending Taylor Swift (whom I don't really like). I lose them as soon as I express my other ideas. Fine. Be gone!

I have a feeling my Finnish heritage has been good to me. If I get any praise I immediately go into suspicious and embarrassed mode. “Please stop.” Of course it comes with the bad also when the praise isn’t overflowing and is actually sincere, but...
