I see at least as many Enlightenment liberals going off track to identitarian left as to populist right and I think few have gone full regressive or full alt-right but are internalising bits or minimising bad to oppose what they see as a greater existential threat on other side

Its aims align with ours. No, I don't think so. The main problem with the Pomo left is that it feeds and enables the populist right. This is what we wrote the manifesto about. The need to stop this existential polarisation

James and I think this is the wrong way to think about it and that the thing which will most take power from the right is the left becoming sane. The problem with triage -focusing on the worst problem - is that it intensifies existential polarisation.

The paranoid/authoritarian/incompetent left and right feed off each other, as you know. Overall, I prefer @JonHaidt 's approach: rising above by focussing on procedural/deliberative/constitutive fairness. Calm the fray by laying the table for inclusive, fair, rational discourse.

The point is that you can largely ignore the specifics of their content-free eruptions. There are many rat-holes that you do not need to go down. I like @SamHarrisOrg, for example, but a head-on skeptical assault on the faith of 1.3B Moslems is a marginal strategy at best.

On the other hand, if you act as a moderator under procedural rules such as the Chicago principles and you fund research and departments engaged in empirical investigation, you've accomplished your goals with elegant means. That is of course the genius of classical liberalism.
