Hu-what do we make of this idea? https://twitter.com/reaINormie/status/943333797948477441 …

You try to make this very complicated when it is very simple for anyone who is liberal in the broadest sense - it is ethical & reasonable to evaluate people on their beliefs, values, actions, not their gender, race, skin colour because the former have ethical significance,
-
Can a democracy choose to evaluate people on immutable characteristics? Yes. They can ban a certain skin colour, height, nose shape, foot size. It would be stupid and unethical but they can. I have no interest in explaining why values matter & melanin doesn't, if you don't see it
-
Agree it's unethical on individual level, but society wide—you can't have everyone, if its not violent why is it wrong to choose based on superficial preferences?
-
You can always bite the bullet and say it would be okay if Japan took in a million Mexicans and Korea took in a million Africans etc, but I think many people across the political spectrum would find this suspect — not just the alt right.
-
If they didn't want to do it JUST COS I don't think many people would call them racist, for instance.

I don't agree with that fwiw. I think they should restrict it based on a combination of skills, cultural characteristics & national needs.
-
Does it have to be morally salient cultural characteristics? Or is it okay to include morally trivial cultural characteristics that the people nonetheless value?

Sorry for dragging out a thread you don't want to be in. I won't add any more. :p

That's fine. I will mute if need be. I can't say any more than I already have. It's not worthy of more complex thought than the basic principles everyone has responded with & rationale for them & there are only so many times you can respond with them. I will tire soon. Again.
