I feel very strongly about parenting, not because I think that it makes a huge difference to how the child will turn out but because I think it makes a huge difference to how children experience childhood.

Sorry... What?

XD It was essentially the principle! I felt that if they made me do things I didn't want to do, I would be compliant and polite & give them nothing to complain about but that I would shut off emotionally. You can make me obey you but at the cost of my love! Very dramatic.

Nine kids in my family. Parents could barely keep names straight. Keeping tabs on everyone was almost impossible. Plus rural Canada in 60s and 70s... Not much to worry about.

For me (*cough* before the 80s), a lot of childhood was being told to go out and find your friends and play. In other words, piss off and leave us adults alone.

Yeah, I didn't want to do that either. But go to my room and read was OK!
