And does it escalate to throwing things next? Where's the line when rude & destructive displays of anger are tolerated? Is cursing at you next? You've already shown a tolerance for rudeness. Why shouldn't she?

She knows where the line is. For us, slamming her own door is on the right side of it. Being abusive or violent to people is not. I don't want to have to stop showing anger when I feel it and feel directing it an inanimate objects in her own space is appropriate.

Nor should you, but violent displays can easily lead to larger violent displays because a little violence is ok, why is more not? I'm not saying don't feel anger, that's ludicrous. I'm merely saying be careful. You aren't always teaching them what you think you're teaching them.

We all need to be careful and think about what we're teaching them. I assure you, I have done this.

And that's really all I ask, is for parents to think about what they're doing with their children as opposed to flying on autopilot and wondering why the plane crashed.

Do you have some reason to think I don't? You'd be wrong. I just disagree with you. I want my child to have as much freedom of expression as possible as long as it doesn't hurt people. I needed that as a child. Hurt myself when restricted from this.

A child's freedom of expression flourishes within known boundaries. There've been lots of studies on that. But those boundaries have to be set by the parents, not the child. I worry when I see parents tolerating violent acts, even small ones.

You might not think it's a mistake, few parents ever do, but the fact of the matter is that it's our children who have to live with our mistakes. We make the well intentioned mistakes & they pay for them, but most people don't realize that until it's too late.

Of course. We must all think about this. I think if I was your daughter, I would have hurt myself regularly and run away very young. We have to know our own kids and what they need. You probably do know yours but I also know mine.

Oh course. As parents we should know our children. Open and honest communication is the only way that happens. You may have tried once, before I put you in counseling & you wouldn't have gotten out of the house.😊I would have tackled your problems like a linebacker, like I do.

So, I wouldn't talk to you now. You wld not have recognised my need for privacy, space, independence - not have seen me as an individual but as someone who had to speak & think & act & feel as you said. Fortunately my parents did because my father is equally introverted & private

You would have bc I would have taught you that from the beginning, like I did with my kids. Kids do as they've been taught, and follow their role models. That's well documented. You would not only speak with me, but would let me help you, if you were one of my kids.
