Another argument on Facebook about whether its reasonable to blame white people for the votes Roy Moore did get. White people as a whole, that is. Their whiteness, specifically.

I also still keep encountering the accusation that if I say that we shouldn't judge people based on race, gender, sexuality etc, this means that I think this isn't happening or isn't the cause of the problem.

I said this the other day but in a different context. It feels new to me. I'm used to people thinking mistaking descriptive statements for prescriptive ones but not the other way round.

eg: I am used to: More men than women want to do engineering. Why do you think women shouldn't do engineering?! But: We shouldn't judge people by their race. How can you not know racism exists?! seems new.

I think you’re taking it too literally. No one is saying white people vote a certain way because they were born white. The implied reason is a system that rewards their whiteness.
-
I don't know what this means. 'Rewards their whiteness.' Seems to be a religious thing.pic.twitter.com/D1IxZ5QyKi

The system in which being white brings advantages. It’s hard not to take free gifts when they are continually offered.
-
And yet this seemed to depend very much on belief rather than on whiteness.

Part of the problem ass the semantic creep in the word "whiteness" to cover both "upholding white supremacy" and some sen"se of "being white" with the casual equivalence prevalent in casual conversation/activism.

This line of attack is supported by the argument that "white" is an invented category which usually ignores that the same must be true of any color (much like your early comments regarding gender). Also: People are bad and thinking yet have access to a lot of words.

Natural consequence of considering race to be merely a social construct.https://twitter.com/HPluckrose/status/941658695687077888 …

I'm not attached to being white. I would be happy to let the label go to the people who do prize it. It may as well be a convenient term of self-identification for people who are to Roy Moore's liking.
