Oh god, the argument is still going on on Facebook. Apparently, the options are 'cis people are obsessed with gender' or 'trans people face no prejudice for not conforming to the gender norms expected of them.'

I'm now being told that cis people are forever writing articles about gender identity whilst trans people rarely broach the issue. Of course, in reality, the vast majority of both groups write no articles but its simply nuts to claim this isn't a more pressing issue for trans ppl

We are forever being told that colour-blindness is a sign of privilege and not wanting to talk about race issues & potential or actual racism all the time is also a sign of privilege - being from a group which doesn't need to be hyper-aware of it.

This claim can be taken to extremes but there is some truth in it. Minorities often do have to think more about the aspect of identity that makes them a minority than the majority does.

This is why there needed to be a Gay Pride and not a Straight Pride. Because straight people simply didn't need to address their sexuality & social acceptance of it. They could just live it & be accepted.

It is completely unsurprising that trans people would need to address issues of gender identity more than cis people for exactly the same reason. How pointing this out is currently getting me labelled a bad person who thinks transphobia doesn't exist, I don't know.

I suspect that, in reality, 'cis people are obsessed with gender' simply means that society has a dominant conception of it as cis - that gender correlates with gonads - and that this makes things hard for trans people.

It does make things hard for trans people but it's unlikely to go away because gender nearly always does correlate with gonads and we have evolved to recognise this because we are a sexually reproducing species.

We support trans rights best, not by blaming the cis majority for conforming roughly to gender norms but by refuting the idea that doing so is some kind of moral imperative.

Conversation getting increasingly dishonest. Trans person said they were confused by my argument. I agreed they were very confused & clarified point. Now accused of saying they are confused because they're trans. This is a sign of my privilege, obviously.

this fixation that some marginalized groups have with gender is appalling. it creates a toxic environment where where even like-minded people are faced with threats and discrimination. this does more harm to their causes, and does nothing to advance their claims
