I still don't understand libertarians. They seem well meaning but how is 'just deregulate everything and the corporations will behave honest guv' a strategy for the real world?

Well, quite.

That's an American misunderstanding which has only come into vogue since followers of Ayn Rand's "philosophy" (don't get me started on this rant) founded a political party they called "Libertarian," back in 1971. Prior to that, most Americans understood "libertarian" the same way
-
I run a philosophy blog for beginners. This is the post I made about Ayn Rand:http://whatsthepointofphilosophy.tumblr.com/post/157845738954/rand-pall …

When I was an undergrad Philosophy major, I asked a couple of my professors about Ayn Rand (keep in mind this was a private school where a stunning 50% of the faculty regarded themselves as "conservative," which was a rather large percentage in an American university at the time)
-
and they both told me that no professional academic philosopher took her seriously. She was never mentioned in any Philosophy class I took, only in PoliSci & Econ. I had to read her stuff on my own time to learn why she wasn't taken seriously, & it was still a few years before
-
I was stupid enough to keep an open mind and read her stuff for myself. I wish I had just listened to literally every single philosophy professor I consulted on this matter.

No, it's good that you did, so you could see for yourself what bullshit it is.

At least your honest. I prefer that over crazy people.

I love your tweets and I'm steadfastly libertarian. Supporting classically liberal ideals is infinitely more important than deregulation. We're allies in all the most important ways. Stay strong!

How can you be a pro-EU socialist, when the EU is a neoliberal construction that's wrecking the welfare state in all eurozone countries (cf. Greece, Ireland and Italy)?

I don't care for labels. I learn from my mistakes, I learn and change my mind. Maybe that's SJW or libertarian, or MRA, or socialist, or maybe just me.

Governments are in a far better position to harm the population than corporations. Governments have a legal monopoly of violence. Of course, corporations do awful things but they are easier to stop.

I think that is simplistic; of course there is a range of libertarian view, some being as you describe. However, libertarians I think recognise a need for government and regulation but that they are likely to make worse choices than individuals.
