I'm fully aware that the political spectrum has shifted left in my lifetime leaving me closer to the centre than I ever have been but I'm still very much to the left of it.

On all the tests, I come out libertarian left. My moral foundations are strongly liberal with just a slight nod to conservatism with some respect for tradition and a fairly low disgust threshhold.

My attitudes have changed tho and recently. I used to have a strongly 'us and them' mentality in opposition to conservatives and religious people. I don't now. The battlelines have changed.

I appreciate a wider range of views now and some of them come from conservatives and religious people. But this, I feel, is because I have become more consistently liberal, not less.

You present yourself as a thoughtful, considerate, intelligent and intellectually honest person who is not possessed by a militant hatred of anyone outside of your group; therefore you appear tolerant of differing political beliefs and willing to give them honest consideration.
-
Well, thank you! That is the aim, certainly.

I suspect it’s the prevailing “us and them” tribal mentality: since you disagree with some liberal orthodoxies, you can’t be Us so you just be Them, ergo a conservative. As a conservative you don’t strike me as a conservative, but as a thoughtful liberal.
-
Thank you, Neil! Strangely, it's conservatives who've been telling me this because they like my writing. I suspect they don't think thoughtful liberals exist. Lefties tell me I'm conservative all the time for the reason you give!

A thoughtful anything is hard to come by these days, especially on twitter!

Post-modernism is taking us into a post-liberal age and is so well embedded in the mainstream that most don't even realise it.. To support Liberalism is to be conservative in that world... which is why PM must be defeated, because it's not the superior position for left to hold

You don’t need to define yourself with labels. Use logic and reason.

You don't see women as helpless victims, you recognise men have problems too, and you don't buy into PoMo or hard-left socialist ideology. These things mean you're conservative in some people's eyes.

Maybe they are confusing criticism of left wing stuff for being right wing?

I think it may have something to do with you not declaring men and masculinity to be the spawn of Satan. And supporting free speech. Only alt-right Nazi MRAs would do such things.

This is the problem with labels. I'd be considered liberal if you dropped me in Alabama, but conservative in someplace like San Francisco. People need to stop worrying about labels and deal with issues.
