I don't tend to talk about capitalism or socialism very much because it would require me to have a much better understanding of the workings of economics than I do & I am much more interested in how people think ideologically.

I am a centre-left liberal which means I favour a blended economy which recognises that capitalism has improved living standards generally and leans towards free trade at the same time as wanting strong safety nets for the poorest. This means I annoy everybody. As usual.

I am of the belief that, if you have a line with C on the right (+100) and S on the left (0), we should be somewhere around the +80-90 mark. Hardcore capitalism puts money above all else, whilst full socialism puts ideology above all else.

Personally, I believe we need small government and big community that is independent of government (@BristolBen seems to think that local government can act as "big community" when I had this discussion with him, to which I obv disagreed). But that's a slightly different matter.

I’d be happy to go through the fundamentals with Helen, without pushing an agenda. You’d offer a counterpoint but we *should* agree on the basics. I’m not sure how interested Helen would be, mind you. She has lots to keep her mind busy already.

Sounds like a contradiction in terms. Unless you believe socialism and capitalism are not ideologies.

I'm interested in how people think psychologically, ideologically. I am not interested in how the economy works.

Got you. A bit of a pity though, as the two major economic systems, free market vs central planning, have a lot to do with how people think, ideologically.

Most of the people talking about capitalism and socialism don't know what they're talking about either.
