It is a mistake to confuse being wrong (Marxism) with a philosophical commitment to there being no wrong or right (postmodernism). Molyneux is making this mistake.

This is not to say that there is no connection between Marxism and postmodernism. They almost certainly answer the same psychological needs rooted the same moral foundations. PoMo can be seen to fill the gap left by the disillusionment with Marxism.

Postmodernism remains anti-capitalist too & it draws on Marxist ideas to do so. Capitalism is also a simplistic modern structure in its understandings. It just doesn't offer any solutions & doesn't bother understanding economics or caring about working class people.

It is tempting to conflate postmodernism with Marxism for two reasons. It makes a neat package of your enemies if you are right-wing. It saves having to understand postmodernism which is pretentious & pointless, whoever you are.

I don't mean that people who conflate the two are necessarily being dishonest or even unconsciously using motivated reasoning. Postmodernism is difficult to understand and spending the time necessary to understand it is seldom worthwhile.

It's frankly a relief to have a straightforward, graspable explanation but we can't properly oppose postmodernism unless we understand its conception of knowledge, reason, truth & it is poles apart from the Marxist one.

PoMos don't tend to understand economics very well and they pay lip-service to class issues coz this would mean acknowledging that white men can be oppressed. They don't see a stigma with Marxism and like to claim it as part of their shtick but they mostly focus on identity.
-
So are amatuer PoMoists themselves the source of the conflation of the two ideas?
-
Partly, yes. Some PoMos rejected it outright whilst others adapted it. Later generations included anti-capitalism and social policies in their activism goals but not very convincingly and the Marxists hate them.

“Postmodernism is a negative metanarrative, surely you must recognize this.” I’m pretty sure Obi Wan Kenobi said this in ‘The Phantom Menace’.

You're counting on people to be perfectly consistent with their beliefs. But the reality of cognitive dissonance would suggest that it's possible to be a PoMo Socialist.

How do they reconcile that with power dynamics metanarrative though?
