Sadly I know why that was a problem. The leaves formed a plastic on the track and the new lightweight trains couldn’t gain traction. Leaves on the line weren’t a problem under steam due to trackside fires caused by the trains.

Also the old DMUs were heavier and also so were the loco hauled trains, so a greater level of traction. I worked for Network Rail for a while.

AFAIK it's because London has some of the oldest public transport infrastructure in the world, operating over capacity most of the time, w/ no time for repairs and not enough investment over past decades.
