I always thought them mistaken, obviously, but I was mistaken in thinking the difference was that they saw more nuance & layers than me but that some of theirs were unsubstantiated.

I thought I had to convince them to simplify & pare away layers of nonsense & defend against claims that I was being overly simplistic in my thinking.

After having spent a few months trying this more directly with academics strongly influenced by postmodernism, I find this is not the case at all.
Show this thread -
It is they who are simplistic and binary even whilst they complain of everyone else being simplistic and binary. They have a very naive view of science & reason and a simplistic ideological take on the world which they just explore in unnecessarily convoluted theoretical language

What is complicated, sophisticated and difficult to get right is science and reason because there is so much provisionality and so much fallibilism to take into account and try to mitigate.

You don't have to do that with postmodernism. Much simpler. If objective reality doesn't exist and subjective truths do & you can decide which to foreground based on past or even present marginalisation, there's no need for epistemic humility or testing or verifying or scepticism

Is there a steady definition of postmodernist? I keep looking it up but don't seem to get the same answer. (Maybe it's just me :))
-
I'm using it in the political sense.
-
The same set of ideas about objective truth and structures of power and cultural constructivism that has evolved through successive waves of critical theory and entered activism.

Ta. :)

I agree most strongly with this statement! Postmodernism is children with hammers in the Parlor of Ideas.

Don't be fooled. The jargon is a dodge. I got my philosophy degree in the 80's and remember them coming up as amateur philosophers of the lit & art & communications departments. Since then they've added melanin & genitals advocacy which made them less subtle, not more.

Post-modernists are only better at obfuscation through jargon.
-
It is intentional. If you try to unpack it, they defend by adding another coating of linguistic distortion. Worse, for them there is no objective shared (scientific) reality, therefore their “lived reality” views are unassailable.

If they can’t explain it with relatively simple words and examples, we can probably assume it’s bullshit.

Tbf, Helen, you're actually fun, and not some bleak engagement with the desideratum of logic.

They adopt sophistry as logic when it's actually antithetical to it.

that’s we follow you and raise hands in despair when we see their simpler, catchier and guilt initiating ideas in mainstream media.

They are really good at making it sound like they've put some thought into their opinions, though.
