Yeah. I think we should try to have a high threshold of tolerance for as wide a range of political views as we can before writing people off but there should be a sticking point. Prejudice against ppl on the grounds of race/sex/sexuality is one for me. https://twitter.com/atticus_amber/status/939068468422307840 …

In principle I agree. However, we are learning more all the time about the genetic bases of moral instincts and political views. To some extent, people’s politically-relevant predispositions & behaviors are innate — neither learned nor possible to be unlearned.

Some incidental chinks in the free will armor are tolerated; but this gets to the heart of the sort of social decisions people find most important. I presume therefore that most people will simply ignore the science on genes and political beliefs.

Evidence be damned, most will simply assume free will and demand that the world conform to this assumption. But what if correlations are found between the genes underlying political beliefs and those underlying other traits like race or sexual orientation?

Such a finding would likely be used as yet another justification for (unfair) generalization and discrimination. But more interestingly, it might force people to seriously question their assumptions about what traits they (and others) truly have control over.

I think we have a good example of what the reaction would be like if we see how people are now over gender differences existing.
