I tend to agree with Camille Paglia's view that it's not the lack of a traditional nuclear family that our society is missing, but rather a lack of close knit communities and extended families.

Humans are pattern identifiers but get into trouble when, after detecting patterns as in yr first two examples, they try to force the patterns back onto individuals.
