Can I add some nuance, are you suggesting this is also the case even before the child is nursery age? because I would strongly disagree there, that's when the child needs the parents most. After as much independence as appropriate to the individuals needs.

They don't need their own lives when they're toddlers, no. They do need someone on top of them at all times then or they'll kill themselves. Often one parent needs to be part-time or at home then or work round each other & enlist friends and grandparents. That's what I did.

I believe from my vague memory of those years that my Mum dealt with it by baby sitting other parents kids. An option which is sadly no longer possible with current laws :(
