In my experience, starting with my dad's generation, you don't expect anything from work apart from getting paid - that's the reason you do it.

I think that is the experience of many people which is very sad. More fortunate people are able to find jobs they enjoy though. I have.

But there are a huge number of things require doing which can never be rewarding or satisfying. Ideally, I think they should be shared out amongst the population insofar as poss.
