Very troubling. My daughter hopes to go into coding. This censorious orthodoxy doesn't just affect conservatives (tho it would still be wrong if it did.)https://twitter.com/mjaeckel/status/937499845098602496 …

Could someone (not necessarily you, HP!) please ask this person, @mjaeckel, with whom I share some views (along w/feeling terrible for what she went thru), why she's blocked me? (Don't even know her.)

My apologies Amy, it was entirely unintentional. I suspect I had fat-fingered the wrong button at some point when I muted a conversation and never even noticed the block. So sorry, and thanks for letting me know. I very much enjoy hearing from you!

Thanks -- I liked you and feel so bad for you about what you went through. Just terrible. Glad you wrote it up. People need to know. I'll follow you and retweet.

PS In between asking what the prob might've been, I got bright & searched both of our IDs...seeing you had crappy kids in your life, too, etc. (per our tweets). Awful that this went turbo in the workplace - when you were calling for fairness to all.

This sort of thing has been a small but growing cancer in academia for some time. When the @JamesADamore memo dementia broke, I was stunned that it had infected corporate America, but hoped that was oneoff. This & several other cases have shown the infection is spreading.

As a friend of @JamesADamore, I certainly knew that I might end up with a target on my back, but somehow, perhaps naively, I didn’t think that it would ever become a real issue.

You’re absolutely right. It’s not about being conservative per se; in my opinion, it’s more about dissent from third-wave radical feminism, because most of these women in tech groups are organized and led by activists.

I owned a software company for twenty years, from the early 80s, and I don't know what you mean by "go(ing) into coding". No one talked about "coding" then. Writing software, specifically system design, was considered both a creative and engineering endeavor, not the end itself.

This type of behavior isn't specific to gender politics either. It blows my mind how some of these folks can't see that they're cannibalizing their own causes. They become so zealous they hurt the very movements they're claiming to champion and can't even see it.

The writer makes the key point early on; women can bully (probably as effectively as men) but this is not spoken of. I doubt this is special to technology.

With luck the pendulum will have swung to a saner political climate in a decade or so. If it hasn’t, well, the censorious orthodoxy of the tech industry may be one of our lesser worries ...
